Don't cook for your ancestors unless… + Spirit Homework too on point?

Aesthetic, I know.

Mom would have been 67 on Saturday, so I made her cassava flan

You all know by now that I really love cooking for my deceased loved ones. It's something I feel like I'm pretty good at.

Baking, on the other hand, I need lots of practice with, which is why I don't know why I decided to make her this cassava flan cake 😅

It is two layers of divine perfection (when she makes it). On the bottom, you have sweetened grated cassava and coconut milk, and on the top, you have creamy, rich flan 🥹

We absolutely inhaled this delectable treat sent straight from the heavens every time she made it. Each and every last one of us. Even those of us who are not programmed for lactose consumption.

The last time I made this was in 2006. I spilled the top layer all over the open oven door--a literal hot mess. I was shaking because my friend who worked at Foot Locker Waikiki had just called me and told me that my celebrity crush had just walked in to her store to buy basketball shorts and she got to ring him up (RIP teen me and RIP 2006 cassava flan).

Anyway... I used this recipe from PinoyBites (not sponsored - I wish) which is very similar, if not identical to the one my mom shared with me. Try it! Maybe yours won't look like a piece of cheese.

While we're on the topic of remembering our loved ones who have passed on, I just want to say that I spend lots of time in the kitchen as part of my spiritual practice because I like it. Even if I'm bad at it sometimes, it's how I connect with my loved ones, because I spent lots of time helping with cooking growing up.

But cooking, baking, and making for your deceased loved ones does not have to be part of your spiritual practice, necessarily. It's not for everyone, and that's great!

What talents and interests do you have that you share with your deceased loved ones? Maybe it's music, storytelling, movies, books, sports, fishing, gardening. Maybe it's roasting each other back and forth. Maybe it's fashion, or animals, or restoring vintage cars.

It doesn't have to be what you see me doing--in fact, I hope it is something that arises from the cultural and/or personal bonds that you have with your deceased loved ones.

Your bond is one of a kind! Couture! Special! And the way you remember them can be, too!

Spirit Homework

I'll let the TikTok comments speak for themselves 😬

I don't know what it is about the latest Spirit Homework, but apparently it is hitting close to home for a lot of folks 😳
